UCC Conference to focus on the community management of Type 2 Diabetes
11.09.2008

Diabetes is a major health problem affecting the general population; with type 2 Diabetes accounting for approximately 80-90% of all cases.
Currently, treatment of diabetes and its complications is estimated to consume 10% of our total health care expenditure. With optimum care many of these complications can be prevented or minimized.

The Diabetes Interest Group (DIG) is a group of GPs and Practice Nurses, from the Cork region, who have come together to optimize the quality of care they are providing to their patients with diabetes. Currently there are 20 practices active in the group, providing care for 2,350 patients with diabetes

On Wednesday next, September 17th, the DIG and the HSE-South will host a joint conference at UCC to discuss the community management of this condition.  The conference titled “Active Management of Type 2 Diabetes in the Community” aims to raise awareness of diabetes, stimulate debate on its optimum management and provide educational support to practices providing this care.

Chairperson of the Conference will be Dr Finbarr Corkery, GP, Cork, a founder member of the Diabetes Interest Group. Ms Mary Banotti, former MEP, will open the conference. Keynote speakers include Dr Mark Davies, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Belfast, who will discuss patient motivation issues and Dr Ray O’Connor, GP, Limerick, who will talk on his experiences of treating to target.  Dr Joe Moran, GP Fermoy, a founder member and current chairman of the DIG steering group will report on the activities of DIG.

Included in the programme are a number of Interactive Workshops. The topics covered will be Team Based Management, Foot Protection, Lifestyle Modification and Complex Case Management. The workshops will be facilitated by experienced experts in these areas.

The Conference takes place in Brookfield Health Science Complex on Wednesday, September 17th 2008.
