UCC Conference to discuss Child Labour and Child Trafficking Issues
07.05.2008

"Combating Child Trafficking for Labour and Sexual Exploitation" is the title of a one-day conference taking place in UCC on Saturday, May 17th 2008, 9.30am-4.30pm, Boole I Lecture Theatre,  UCC.
This one-day conference will explore the issues of Child Labour and Child Trafficking from both an Irish and an international perspective.  Increasingly, children are being bought and sold within and across national borders.  The International Labour Organisation estimates that there may be 218 million children trapped in child labour worldwide of whom 126 million children were engaged in hazardous work and many of whom are living in situations of modern day slavery.  Recent research estimates that 120,000 women and children are trafficked into Western Europe each year (European Commission, 2001).

The conference aims to increase awareness of the issues of Child Labour and Child Trafficking and link issues of global concern to local issues presenting in Ireland.   It will highlight the policy and practice responses being implemented in Ireland, the UK and India to combat trafficking in children and protect child victims.

Speakers include:  Maureen Forrest and Sarbani Das Roy (Hope Foundation Ireland and India), Christine Beddoe (ECPAT UK), Kieran O'Brien (UNICEF Ireland), Mary Nicholson (SPCC), Nusha Yonkova (Immigrant Council of Ireland), Marion Walsh, Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and Mary Crilly (Sexual Violence Centre, Cork).

The conference is supported by the Department of Applied Social Studies, UCC, Hope Foundation (Cork and India), Women's Studies, UCC and the College of Arts, Celtic Studies & Social Science, UCC.

Admission to the conference is free.  To reserve a place, please contact Shirley Martin, email s.martin@ucc.ie, Tel. 021 4903391 or Jacqui O'Riordan, email jacquior@ucc.ie, Tel. 021 4205131.
