St Petersburg delegation visit UCC

This week (May 15th/16th) sees a high-level official delegation from St Petersburg, Russia, visit Cork to promote cultural and educational links between the two cities.

This week (May 15th/16th) sees a high-level official delegation from St Petersburg, Russia, visit Cork to promote cultural and educational links between the two cities.
Four public events have been organised during the two day visit. The delegation will also visit UCC where links have already been established between the State University of St Petersburg and UCC's History Department.
Thursday May 15th:
At 5.00pm, Dr Tatiana Ponomareva will lecture on the Russian poets of the Silver Age (i.e. early 20th century) at Cork City Library. Dr Ponomareva is Director of the Vladimir Nabokov Museum in St Petersburg and an expert on Russian literature; she is interested in Russian connections with modern Irish literature and writers.
At 7.30pm, the much-praised Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet, graduates of the world-famous St Petersburg Conservatoire, will perform a concert of Russian and Russian-themed music at the Honan Chapel, UCC. This will include excerpts from Haydn's 'Russian' String Quartet and works by Glazunov, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin and others. Admission is free.
Friday, May 16th:
At 3.00pm, Dr Andrey Mashinyan will lecture on 'Two Lands, two epic tales' in the O'Rahilly Building, UCC, Room 161. Dr Mashinyan is Director of the Irish Culture Centre, State University of St. Petersburg. His lecture will consider Irish and Russian cultural links through literature.
Also at 3.00pm, there will be a screening of innovative documentaries about St Petersburg in the Glucksman Gallery, UCC. 'Look at the Face,' directed by Pavel Kogan (1966), is a hidden camera record of the reactions of visitors to the Hermitage while standing in front of Leonardo da Vinci's 'Madonna'. 'The tram moves through the city,' directed by Lyudmila Stanoukinas (1973), is a film classic of the Leningrad school of documentary of the 1960s, which presents a panorama of the city and the times.
