Dr Ron Pinhasi, Department of Archaeology, UCC has recently been awarded funding from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) to conduct research on the evolutionary history of Neanderthals in the southern and northern Caucasus.
The project will investigate Neanderthal demography and evolutionary history in that region, and will assess potential Neanderthal interactions with expanding populations of anatomically modern humans.
Dr Pinhasi is directing an international research team that will conduct extensive fieldwork and scientific analysis in the southern (Armenia, Georgia) and northern (southern Russia) Caucasus. The aim is to fill an important geographic and temporal gap in our understanding of Neanderthals and the emergence of modern humans in Eurasia, and will highlight Neanderthal adaptive successes and perhaps failures at this crossroads of continents.
