Professor Eamonn Quigley appointed President of American College of Gastroenterology
10.11.2008

Professor Eamonn Quigley, Professor of Medicine and Human Physiology, UCC becomes the first non-US President of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG).  The American College represents 10,000 physicians from 75 countries.

Professor Quigley is also a consultant gastroenterologist at Cork University Hospital and a principal investigator at the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC), a research centre funded by Science Foundation Ireland and based in UCC focussing on gastrointestinal health.

Professor Quigley says one of the greatest challenges facing the speciality of gastroenterology is to get top class people interested, particularly in clinical research, which provides a bridge linking the lab and the bedside. “As an academic, I have a major interest in education and training in gastroenterology and as President, I will be paying particular attention to the new challenges that face the area in terms of how best to train people to cope with a changing speciality over the next few years.”

Professor Quigley is also keen to encourage and foster links between the American College and other societies. As current President of the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) he has already developed strong ties between the ACG and the WGO and he plans to continue this work.

The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) was founded in 1932 to advance the scientific study and medical practice of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Through annual scientific meetings, the American Journal of Gastroenterology, regional postgraduate training courses and research grants, the ACG provides its members with the most accurate and up-to-date scientific information on digestive health and GI disorders.

As President, he also presides over the Board of Trustees of the ACG and is delighted that the Board will be holding their first meeting in Ireland next June.
