Poster to create awareness of Famous Irish Scientists
22.01.2008

The Irish Times, in association with Barry's Tea, has published a wall-poster titled Super Irish Scientists.  The poster content was written by Professor William Reville, Public Awareness of Science Officer at UCC.
The poster is distributed with today's Irish Times (January 22nd 2008) and copies will also be sent to all schools in Ireland.  In total over 250,000 copies of the poster will be circulated.

Many people don't know that Ireland has a rich scientific heritage.  The poster lists 18 of the most famous Irish Scientists giving a brief biographical note and brief scientific details of their major scientific discoveries.  The list, of course, includes the great George Boole (1815-1864) the first Professor of Mathematics at Queen's College Cork (now UCC).  Boole is known as the Father of Computer Science.  He invented Boolean Algebra which is basic to the design of the modern computer and electronic hardware responsible for much modern technology.

The other famous Irish Scientists included on the poster are: Francis Beaufort (1774-1857), John Bell (1928-1990), J.D. Bernal (1901-1971), Robert Boyle (1627-1691), Denis Parsons Burkitt (1911-1993), Jocelyn Bell Burnell (1943-), Rev. Nicholas Callan (1799-1864), George Francis Fitzgerald (1851-1901), Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1805-1865), Kathleen Lonsdale (1903-1971), William Parsons (1800-1867) and Charles Parsons (1854-1931), George Gabriel Stokes (1819-1903), George Johnston Stoney (1826-1911), William Thomson (1824-1907), John Tyndall (1820-1893) and Earnest Walton (1903-1995).

Professor Reville comments: "I hope this poster will not only enhance general public awareness of Irish Science, but will help to instil a sense of confidence in young people that we Irish have a natural talent for science.”
