Major Health Issues to be addressed at Research Conference
18.03.2008

Infection & Immunity and Food & Health will be the focus for discussion at this year's 2nd College of Medicine & Health Joint UCC/Cork University Teaching Hospitals Health Research Day which takes place on Friday, June 6th 2008 in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, University College Cork.

The conference aims to stimulate co-operation across disciplines and professions, between clinicians and scientists, and help promote and strengthen clinical research.  It also encourages the development of a comprehensive research-based regional and national health strategy. All Health Care Professionals, scientists, are invited to attend and General Medical Practitioners are particularly welcome.

Keynote addresses will be presented on a wide range of topics including MRSA, TB, Vaccination, and the links between Food, Nutrition and Health by the following National and International experts:

  • Professor Tom Keane, Interim Director of National Cancer Control Programme
  • Professor Michael Berndt, the Incoming Head of College of Medicine
  • Dr Mary Horgan, Infectious Diseases Consultant, CUH
  • Dr Elizabeth Keane, Director of Public Health, HSE South
  • Dr Paddy Sleaman, Department of Zoology, Ecology and Plant Science, UCC
  • Professor Kevin Cashman, Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences, UCC

  • Professor Paul Ross, Head of Moorepark Biotechnology Centre, Teagasc
  • Professor Ted Dinan, Head of Department of Psychiatry, UCC

The translation of scientific advances into practical health outcomes remains a formidable challenge. UCC together with the HSE are striving to achieve real medical breakthroughs, to further the practice and translation of evidence-based medicine in the pursuit of improving health outcomes for populations and individuals.

The annual Research Day provides an excellent opportunity for participants to share knowledge, gain new understanding and to strengthen connections between clinicians and researchers. Following on the success of last year's conference, a high level of local and national interest is expected.
