Launch of MPS Asset Management/UCC Graduate Work Placement Scheme at UCC
22.02.2008

The Italian Ambassador to Ireland, Lucio Alberto Savoia, officially launched a work placement scheme for UCC graduates of Italian with MPS Asset Management Ireland Ltd.

MPS is a Dublin-based investment company devoted to portfolio management and part of the group headed by Monte dei Paschi di Siena, founded in 1472 and considered the oldest bank in the world.

Speaking in UCC's Council Room, Ambassador Savoia described the scheme as an example of successful collaboration between an Italian business and an Irish educational institution, emphasizing also the importance of the European Union context.

Professor Peter Kennedy, Vice-President for Research, welcomed the Ambassador to UCC on behalf of the President, Dr Michael Murphy.  He commended Dr Mark Chu, Head of the Department of Italian, UCC, for his work in establishing this link with MPS on behalf of UCC graduates, and spoke of how, in his own career, foreign-language skills had given him the opportunity to work with an international team in Switzerland. Professor Kennedy also extended his thanks to MPS for their demonstration of confidence in UCC graduates.

MPS Asset Management was represented at the event by Mr Emanuele Patti, Deputy General Manager, and by two UCC graduates already employed by the bank, Eoin Edwards (BA Economics and Italian, 2004) and Brian Ó Corcoráin (BComm (European) with Italian, 2007). Eoin addressed the students of Italian present at the launch, outlining the opportunity the placement scheme will offer new graduates to acquire important experience and to use their Italian language skills on a daily basis.

Professor Deirdre Hunt, Director of the BComm (International) degree programmes, concluded the launch by referring to MPS as an example of globalization in the financial services sector, and citing further examples of the opportunities for graduates of Commerce and languages, including the recent announcement of the creation of 150 additional jobs by Cork-based Citco Global Securities Services.
