Jack Lynch: Politics and Sport, Personality and Leadership – UCC Conference
23.09.2008

The Department of History, University College Cork, in association with The Irish Examiner, is pleased to announce that a two-day conference on the life and political and sporting career of Jack Lynch is scheduled to take place in University College Cork on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th October 2008.
The conference titled 'Jack Lynch: politics and sport, personality and leadership', is being held to mark the imminent release of a major new biography of the former Taoiseach by Professor Dermot Keogh of the Department of History. The event has attracted a wide range of distinguished speakers from the worlds of academia, journalism and sport, each of whom will analyse different aspects of the achievements and legacy of this crucial figure in the history of modern Ireland.

The principal speakers on the opening night of the conference are the Taoiseach, Mr Brian Cowen TD and Professor Dermot Keogh himself. The list of speakers for Saturday includes Drs Andrew McCarthy, Jonathan Bardon and John Walsh (of the Departments of History in University College Cork, Queen's University Belfast, and Trinity College Dublin respectively), Dr Michael Kennedy of the Royal Irish Academy, Mr Stephen Collins, political editor of the Irish Times, and Mr Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh of Radio Telefís Éireann.

Topics to be covered during the event include the former Taoiseach's approach to the question of Northern Ireland; his handling of the economy (both during his time as Minister for Finance and as Taoiseach); his relationship with the Fianna Fáil party; the development of education policy (notably, but not solely, during his time as Minister for Education); the evolution of Irish foreign policy during his time in office; and, naturally, his sporting career.

This event is being organised by Professor Dermot Keogh and Gabriel Doherty of UCC's History Department, and is the latest of an on-going series of conferences organised by the Department whose purpose is to examine the evolution of the independent Irish state.

The proceedings will take place on the Friday in the UCC's Aula Maxima and on the Saturday in the Boole IV lecture theatre.

The conference is open to the public, and further details can be obtained from Gabriel Doherty at 021 4902783, email g.doherty@ucc.ie. Additional information can be obtained at the conference website:
