"Is Biodiversity Threatened by Climate Change?"
07.02.2008

The Millennium Ecosystem Report has said that by the end of the twenty-first century, climate change and its impacts may be the dominant direct driver of biodiversity loss and changes in ecosystem services globally.

Historically, habitat and land use change have had the biggest impact on biodiversity but climate change is projected to increasingly affect all aspects of biodiversity, from individual organisms, through populations and species, to ecosystem composition and function. In the next lecture of the Faculty of Science Public Lecture Series at UCC on February 13th, Professor Mike Jones will examine the evidence for these predictions and assesses the consequences both locally and globally.

Professor Mike Jones is Professor and Head of Botany in the School of Natural Sciences at Trinity College Dublin.  He obtained a BA Hons degree in 1968 from the University of Lancaster.  He received his PhD in 1971, also from the University of Lancaster.  He is Editor of the Biology and Environment, Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy and is the Chairman of COST Action 627, Carbon Storage in European Grasslands.  He is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy Committee on Climate Change.  Mike was made a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin in 1987; received a Berkeley Fellowship at TCD for the 2002/2003 academic year; and a MRIA award in 2003.  His current research project is Assessment of the European Terrestrial Carbon Balance (Carbo-Europe-IP), EU sixth framework programme.

The lecture, which is sponsored by The Royal Irish Academy, takes place at UCC's Boole Lecture Theatre 4 at 8pm on Wednesday, February 13th. Organised by Professor William Reville, Public Awareness of Science Officer and Faculty of Science, UCC, the highly popular lecture series, continues weekly until March 26th 2008. Admission is free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend. See http://understandingscience.ucc.ie
