"Extraordinary Lives: Alternative Careers" - Lecture
25.02.2008

UCC Suas Society has pleasure in welcoming Brendan Tuohy and Beni Oburu back to their alma mater for a special "Extraordinary Lives: Alternative Careers" address.
This event is part of a series across Ireland to inspire young people to look beyond the career paths traditionally associated with their field of study and become actively involved in doing something to effect change in the lives of others around them.  Each guest will reflect on the journey they have taken and share how they have used their skills and interest to 'made a difference' in our world.

Recently retired Secretary General at the Department of Marine, Communications and Natural Resources, Mr Tuohy has extensive experience in the Irish public service, previously being Secretary General at the Department of Public Enterprise and holding senior roles in the Departments of Transport and Environment.

Brendan served as a member of the National Economic and Social Council.  He was the founder (and is currently Chairman) of the UN body, the Global eSchools and Communities Initiative. He is also a member of a number of boards, including Social Entrepreneurs Ireland and Niall Mellon Township Trust.  Brendan holds a degree in civil engineering from UCC. He has recently been appointed Adjunct Professor in the Department of Business Information Systems, UCC.

Beni Oburu is a mother of four children who lives in Fermoy, Co Cork. Beni was educated by Irish nuns at Our Lady of Mercy in south Nairobi, Kenya. She moved to Ireland from the UK in 1994 and founded Cultural Links, an innovative educational project that teaches Irish school children about African cultures.   The programme has reached over 25,000 students.

Her pioneering work was recognised in 2003 when the Development Education Unit at the Department of Foreign Affairs asked her to rewrite the Cultural Links programme to fit in with the revised primary curriculum.  Beni studied childcare in Kenya and for a degree in Development Studies at UCC.

The talk takes place tomorrow Tuesday, February 26th in Room 110, Civil Engineering Building at 7.30pm.  It will be followed by a session of questions and answers.  Members of the public are invited to attend and admission is free.
