"Complementary and Alternative Medicine - Holistic Healing or Noxious Nonsense?"
13.03.2008

"Complementary and Alternative Medicine - Holistic Healing or Noxious Nonsense?" is the title of the next lecture of the Faculty of Science Public Lecture Series at UCC on Wednesday, March 19th.

In this lecture, Professor Colin Bradley will review the principal types of treatment that are categorised as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).  He will attempt to review the evidence for their use and outline the potential benefits and harms attributed to them and will try and provide listeners with a practical approach to such treatments so that they can maximise the likelihood of benefiting from CAM and minimise the risk of coming to harm.

Colin Bradley was appointed as the first ever Professor of General Practice in UCC in 1997. Preceding this he was Senior Lecturer in General Practice at the University of Birmingham and, previous to that, a lecturer at the University of Manchester.  His doctoral thesis was on the decision making of general practitioners with regard to prescribing and he has continued to work in the area of medicine use by GPs and their patients.

The lecture takes place at UCC's Boole Lecture Theatre 4 at 8pm on Wednesday, March 19th. Organised by Professor William Reville, Public Awareness of Science Officer, Faculty of Science, UCC, the highly popular lecture series, continues weekly until March 26th 2008. Admission is free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend. See http://understandingscience.ucc.ie
