College of Saint Rose Chamber Singers to perform in UCC's Aula Maxima
04.01.2008

UCC's International Education Office welcomes, from Albany, New York, The College of Saint Rose Chamber Singers for a lunch-time performance in the Aula Maxima on Tuesday next, January 8th at 1.00pm.  Admission is free and all are welcome.
The Chamber Singers group was founded 20 years ago by Professor Robert Sheehan as an outgrowth of the Masterworks Chorale.  Under the direction of Associate Professor of Music, Michael Levi, since 1998, the Chamber Singers have performed with such artists as Ronan Tynan, Pete Seeger, Dr Billy Taylor and the pop/country singer, Kenny Rogers.

UCC’s link with the College of Saint Rose extends back to 2000 when the former Mayor of Albany, Mr Thomas M. Whalen joined the teaching staff of the Department of Government for that Autumn Semester.  A native of Albany, Tom, as he was known to friends, Whalen was very proud of his home town and when Mayor, set about a regeneration plan for the city.  By the end of his term of office in 1993, Albany was rebounding and enjoying an unparalleled cycle of commercial investment and development.  Tom always valued the importance of education and he encouraged Albany's colleges to make links with international partners.  He was instrumental in the establishment of a faculty exchange scheme between the Department of History and Politics, The College of Saint Rose, and the Department of Government, UCC.  Each year since 2003, staff from the two departments have been involved in teaching exchanges.  Another of Tom's legacies was the establishment of the Thomas Whalen Scholarship scheme in 2002.  This provides for six students of UCC's BSc Government and Public Policy Programme to travel to Albany, live on The College of Saint Rose campus and work in the New York State Assembly.  The New York State Assembly internship programme offers the 'Whalen Students' a chance to participate in state government and the legislative process through a well-structured practical learning experience.

Sadly, Tom Whalen did not live to see any of these achievements come to fruition.  He was killed in a car accident in March 2002 on the eve of the arrival of the first group of 'Whalen Interns' to Albany.  However, his memory lives on in the thriving faculty exchange scheme and internship programme.

Ms Marita Foster, International Education Officer (Acting), was invited to visit The College of St. Rose in 2003 in order to strengthen the connection and to encourage more of the Saint Rose students to study abroad at UCC.  Marita has kept up a strong connection with Ms Ann Higgins Wilkening, Director of International Education, at The College of Saint Rose since her visit and UCC receives a steady number of visiting students since then.  Katherine Anne Scott is studying at UCC this Spring Semester.
