Bursary for Tyndall National Institute Post Graduate Student
01.04.2008

The 2008 BOC Gases Postgraduate Bursary was presented recently to David Goulding at The Tyndall National Institute, Cork.

David, a native of Cork City, graduated with a BSc (Joint Honours) degree in Mathematics and Physics and an MSc degree in Physics at University College Cork. His MSc thesis was titled "Spontaneous and Stochastic Effects in Optical Systems" and he was awarded an IRCSET research grant to carry out this work under the supervision of Dr Guillaume Huyet.

In January 2006, David began his PhD in Physics under Dr Huyet in the Tyndall National Institute and was again awarded an IRCSET research grant to carry out his doctoral studies.

His present work is focused on Quantum Dot (QD) semiconductor lasers. A quantum dot is a small piece of semiconductor material on the order of a few nanometres in size (about one million times smaller than a grain of sand) in which the electrons are tightly confined in all three spatial dimensions. QD lasers have quantum dots as the active laser medium in the light emitting region. Due to this a device is obtained which is expected to have many benefits over both Quantum Well and bulk lasers, the most commonly used lasers at present.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony at The Tyndall National Institute Cork, Gerry Donovan, Business Director, said: “We wish David success with his future career.  BOC Gases is well aware of the importance of research for the continuing development of the successful high technology companies, which are established in Ireland.  We are delighted to play our part in support of this vital activity."

BOC Gases is a member of the Linde Group. A global industrial gases provider, the company employs about 20,000 people and supplies compressed and bulk gases, chemicals and equipment. In fiscal 2005, BOC Gases achieved sales of approximately 5 billion.

For more than a century the company’s gases and expertise have contributed to advances in many industries and aspects of everyday life, including steel-making, refining, chemical processing, environmental protection, wastewater treatment, welding and cutting, food processing and distribution, glass production, electronics and healthcare.
