Award for UCC PhD Student
29.05.2008

Belinda Houghton, a Physiology Department PhD student attached to Professor Edward Johns’ laboratory, Biological Sciences Institute, UCC has received a Recognition Award from the American Physiological Society Water & Electrolyte Homeostasis Section as the top Graduate Student at this year’s Experimental Biology Meeting.
This is the major meeting for Biological Sciences in the US, with some 13,000 attendees. It was held in San Diego, California.  The selection was based on the quality and interest of the abstract Belinda submitted and on a competitive presentation to the awarding panel and membership of the Society.

Belinda’s PhD studies are concerned with investigating the interactions between the brain renin-angiotensin system, elevated dietary sodium intake and vasopressin in determining sympathetic neural outflow to the kidney.

The knowledge gained for her PhD studies may impact on the development of novel drugs for use in cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and heart failure.
