"Are Biofuels Good or Bad" - A Burning Question to be addressed at UCC Symposium
02.07.2008

Climate change is one of the major global concerns in the 21st Century, and in particular energy use in transport, is one of the major producers of greenhouse gas (GHG).
This is the theme of a major International Energy Agency Biofuels Symposium to be held in UCC on Tuesday, September 16th next.

The Biofuels Directive sets a target of 5.75% of transport fuel to be replaced on an energy basis by 2010 and EU Member States have agreed a 10% target for 2020. First generation transport biofuels include oil crops such as oilseed rape for biodiesel, wheat, maize and sugar beet for bioethanol. Second generation biofuels utilize non-food sources, such as residues, and lignocellulosic biomass.

What crop (if any) should be grown? What biofuel should dominate the market? What are other countries doing? What are the strategies in these countries?  These and other questions will be addressed at the Symposium by an international gathering which will include delegates from Australia, Canada, Denmark, United States, Germany, South Africa.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) acts as energy policy advisor to 27 countries in their effort to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for their citizens. Members are drawn from leading researchers, government officials, and industry pioneers.

Academic Leader of the Symposium is Dr Jerry Murphy, Lecturer in Transportation Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UCC and Principal Investigator in Bioenergy and Biofuels in the Environmental Research Institute (ERI).

All enquiries should be addressed to Ms Mary McCarthy-Buckley/Ms Deirdre Crone, Symposium Secretariat, Tel 021 4903363/4903178, e-mail IEABio2008@ucc.ie
