Ambassador of India to Ireland visits UCC
29.04.2008

UCC's connections with India, past, present and future, were the subjects for discussion during a visit to the University today (Tuesday, April 29th 2008) by His Excellency PS Raghavan, Ambassador of India to Ireland.
In the course of his visit, the Ambassador, whose own education background is in the area of Physics/Engineering, held meetings with senior UCC academics, the Tyndall National Institute and the International Education Office.

UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy, welcoming the Ambassador on his first visit to UCC, referred to the University's historical connections with India which date back to the nineteenth century when, as Queen's College Cork, civil servants were trained for the colonial administration of the sub-continent.  "Now, over a century and a half later, UCC as a leading Irish research university is seeking to re-establish this connection with one of the world's emerging superpowers", he said.

A highlight of the visit was the viewing earlier in the day by the Ambassador of selected items from UCC's significant India collection. A website to showcase the collection has just been launched at http://www.ucc.ie/chronicon/irishindia/ The UCC collection has also been the subject of an article of The Times of India yesterday (April 28th 2008). The Ambassador expressed the hope of seeing a historian coming from India to study these archives and artefacts as part of a wider strategic alliance between UCC and equivalent universities and research institutions in India.

There are currently more than 40 Indian students - all postgraduate - studying in UCC. They study across a range of disciplines that include IT, Engineering, Biotechnology and Food Science. UCC's International Education Office is engaged in an active student recruitment in India and the number of students being recruited from India is set to rise significantly in the coming year. The positive experience of studying at UCC was expressed by student Prasad Kovvuru, a PhD student in Biochemistry who, along with his Indian student compatriots, had the opportunity of meeting with the Ambassador. "My experience as a research student in University College Cork has been incredibly positive. The academic environment here is top-class", he said.

Today's visit concluded with a business seminar presented by the Ambassador titled "Perspectives on India - the opportunities & challenges of doing business with and in India."  The seminar, open to the public, was attended by the local business community in Cork, including the Cork Chamber of Commerce and MBA Association, UCC staff and students.
