Writer and Broadcaster, David Crystal to deliver public lecture at UCC
16.10.2007

Well-known writer and broadcaster, David Crystal returns to UCC later this month to give a public lecture on "The Future of Englishes".
The lecture takes place at 6pm on Thursday October 25th, in Lecture Theatre G02, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex.

David Crystal held a chair at the University of Reading for 10 years, and is now Honorary Professor of Linguistics at the University of Wales, Bangor. In his talk titled "The Future of Englishes", David Crystal will consider the consequences of the new-found global status of English for its future development. He will review the relevant statistics, the historical reasons for the language's present position, and the trends which are already affecting English world-wide.

Currently, David Crystal divides his time between work on language and work on general reference publishing. His authored works are mainly in the field of language, including several Penguin books, but he is perhaps best known for his two encyclopedias for Cambridge University Press, The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language and The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language. Recent authored books (in 2006) include The Fight for English and As They Say in Zanzibar, and (in 2007) By Hook or By Crook: A Journey in Search of English.

This lecture is jointly sponsored by the MA in Applied Linguistics Group and the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, UCC.  Members of the public are invited to attend and admission is free.
