Visit to UCC by Chinese Delegation
14.12.2007

One of UCC's key strategic partners in China, Beijing Technology and Business University (BTBU), recently visited UCC. The high level delegation was led by BTBU President, Professor Shen Yu, and consisted of three other professors.

Co-operation between BTBU and UCC spans many disciplines, including Economics, Computer Science, Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Food Science. There are currently 24 students from BTBU studying at UCC - a figure expected to double next year.

While at UCC, the group were received by UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy, who said: "I am delighted to welcome my counterpart, President Shen Yu, to UCC.  BTBU is one of our most significant partners in China."

The delegation also met with Registrar and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Professor Paul Giller, the International Education Office, members of the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science, and staff and students from the Department of Economics.  Staff from the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies also participated in the visit, as did the work placement officer to discuss how best students can prepare for their placement while still in China.  The group also availed of the opportunity to meet BTBU students who have transferred to UCC as part of "split degree" programmes.

The outcome of this visit was decision by BTBU to send staff to UCC for professional development from 2008 onwards. This will further develop educational links between UCC and China.
