Bursary for UCC Graduate

UCC graduate, Clare O'Gorman has been presented with a bursary of €2,000 by Centocor Biologics Ireland. Clare, who was conferred with an MSc at the UCC Winter Conferring Ceremonies was awarded the bursary for her high academic achievement in the MSc Biotechnology.

Dr Pam Wright, Technical Operations Director for Centocor Ireland presented the award to Clare.

On behalf of UCC, Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick, Head of the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science thanked Centocor for their ongoing commitment to UCC, and, in particular their continued support in offering work placement to the MSc Biotechnology and undergraduate students studying Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds, and Commerce.

Clare completed work placement in Boston Scientific, Cork from April - September 2007.  She has been retained by the Company to work in the Microbiology Department.

In June 2006, UCC and Centocor announced a Partnership whereby several joint programmes were agreed in the areas of recruitment, student placement, student sponsorship and other academic/industry links.  
Speaking at the launch of the partnership, Mr Paul Treacy, General Manager, Centocor Biologics Ireland, said: "One of the main drivers that convinced Centocor (Johnson & Johnson) to locate in Cork was the proximity to first rate academic institutions, such as UCC, that could guarantee a consistent supply of highly qualified graduates. Centocor Biologics is the 5th Johnson & Johnson manufacturing operation to have located in the Munster region and, to date, our experience of the quality of the Irish educational system, gained through these investments, has been very favourable."
