UCC's School of Pharmacy launches two-year distance learning postgraduate course
04.10.2007

UCC's School of Pharmacy has announced the launch of a two-year distance learning Masters in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality systems.

The programme is targeted at suitably-qualified graduates who are attempting to further their career prospects in the pharmaceutical industry.

The new Masters programme meets the educational requirements for Qualified person (QP) status, as defined in EU directive 2001/83/EC, and has been approved by the Irish Medicines Board (IMB) in this regard.

Speaking at the official Programme Launch and Orientation Evening, Professor Caitriona O'Driscoll, Head of the School of Pharmacy welcomed the guests which included academics, an acclaimed industry speaker and the students enrolled on the course. She, along with Professor Robert McConnell, Acting Head of the College of Medicine & Health, emphasised the close links between the School of Pharmacy and the Medical Faculty and reinforced the importance of their combined involvement.

Professor Anita Maguire, Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Director of the Analytical and Biological Chemistry Research Facilty (ABCRF) at UCC in welcoming the programme said: "This MSc programme was first discussed nine years ago when it was identified as one of the key strategic developments enabled through the establishment of the new School of Pharmacy at UCC adding that the work involved in bringing the course to fruition is a credit to all involved."   She said that the launch of this new programme is a further step in bridging the gap between the industrial and academic worlds, and also the various disciplines involved in the pharmaceutical sciences. The chemistry content of the programme, which will interlink with the disciplines of medicinal, analytical and analytical chemistry, will focus on ensuring that the participants develop the chemistry skills to guarantee the quality of pharmaceutical products.

Dr Brendan Griffin, Course Coordinator outlined the course topics and referred to the innovative teaching methods which the course offered including teleconferencing tutorial sessions, online continuous assessments and the use of a discussion board on Blackboard.

John Alexander, Managing Director, Novartis, Ireland also addressed the gathering.  He described that from a pharmaceutical industry perspective, having QP status was 'equivalent to having an MBA' and emphasised its significance in assisting him to the top in his career.

The School of Pharmacy at UCC was established in 2003 to provide undergraduate and postgraduate courses in mainstream and specialist areas of pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry.
