Spectacular Exhibitions Open at Gluckman
05.07.2007

This evening (July 5th 2007) will see the opening of two new exhibitions at the Lewis Glucksman Gallery. Gerhard Richter: Survey and Overtake, curated by RenŽ Zechlin and Matt Packer.

Gerhard Richter: Survey is a retrospective exhibition presented by ifa, the German Institute of Cultural Relations. Ifa invited Gerhard Richter to actively participate in the selection process. The resulting collection of twenty-seven works give an insight into all the phases of Richter's creative work - from the photo-paintings of the 1960s to the abstract paintings of the 1980s and 1990s.  The second exhibition Overtake, curated by RenŽ Zechlin and Matt Packer, presents international contemporary artists that reconstruct and reinterpret existing artworks and practices of a former generation, in order to produce and instruct new works.

Both exhibitions will be officially opened by Olive Braiden, Chair of the Arts Council and will run until October 7th.

On the occasion of the Richter and Overtake exhibition openings at the Glucksman, UCC President honoured Lewis Glucksman, who died a year ago today (July 5th 2007).  "Dr Lewis Glucksman was known for his great love of Ireland, and his philanthropic commitment to the region has left a very tangible mark on UCC. His name is intricately woven into the fabric of this campus, manifest in the Marine Facility and the Gallery which bear his name.  In the 2 and 1/2 years since it opened, the Glucksman gallery has received many awards and accolades. It bears witness to the excellence associated with the Glucksman name and has a key role to play in the cultural life of the region. With the support of the Arts Council, the Glucksman's internationally recognised artistic programme will continue to develop and I am delighted to acknowledge that growing partnership in the presence of the Chair of the Arts Council, Olive Braiden" said Dr Murphy.

Fiona Kearney, Glucksman Director said: "The Glucksman is privileged to honour Lewis Glucksman on the first anniversary of his death. The Glucksman gallery has welcomed nearly 200,000 visitors since it opened in October 2004, and it is this genuine interest in our programmes from both Cork citizens and visitors that pay real tribute to Lew and Loretta Glucksman's generosity."
