Glucksman Gallery celebrates its third birthday by becoming one of the 1001 Buildings to visit before you die!
12.10.2007

The award-winning Lewis Glucksman Gallery today (Friday, October 12th 2007) celebrates its third birthday with the announcement that is has been selected as one of 1001 architectural masterpieces worldwide in a forthcoming book by architecture expert, Mark Irving.
Today, three years after President Mary McAleese formally inaugurated the gallery, Loretta Brennan Glucksman and UCC President,  Dr Michael Murphy, will join gallery director, Fiona Kearney, and over 100 guests to celebrate the Glucksman's third year with a special gala dinner and preview of the gallery's 2008 Andy Warhol exhibition.

Since opening, the Glucksman has won numerous art and architectural awards, including Best Public Building in Ireland, a UK Civic Trust award, and a nomination for the Stirling Prize. On the evening of the celebrations, the Glucksman's Director, Fiona Kearney, will announce that the gallery has been selected as one of the 1001 Buildings to See Before You Die, in a book to be published later this month by Cassell Illustrated. The book has been described as "a visual testament to the beauty, grace, and fortitude of the world's greatest architectural achievements."

In expressing her delight at the Glucksman's continuing success,  Fiona Kearney said: "We are very proud of what we have achieved in a relatively short space of time. When President McAleese opened the gallery in 2004, she said that the Glucksman represented a new confident Ireland and that our success would depend on the supportive partnership of the University, the city and its artistic community. I hope we have proved her right! The Glucksman has been a major addition to the cultural life of the region, and our growing international reputation positions Cork, and Ireland, as places of confident artistic expression, while our education programmes enable both students and the wider public to develop visual literacy skills, crucial in a time of increasingly visual communications."

The Glucksman Gallery
The Glucksman's artistic mission is to explore all aspects of visual culture and present a range of innovative and intellectually stimulating displays. The Glucksman is in the unique position of being an integral part of the University community while also attracting the wider public through its exhibition and events programme. It fosters scholarship in a new environment placing particular emphasis on the unique role of visual media in communicating knowledge.
