Films of UCC Faculty of Science Public Lectures
02.08.2007

The Faculty of Science at UCC runs an Annual Public Lecture Series organised by Professor William Reville, Public Awareness of Science Officer at UCC and Irish Times Columnist.
These lectures are now routinely filmed by UCC Outreach Television and are available to view on the UCC Public Awareness and Understanding of Science website (http://understandingscience.ucc.ie) and on the Faculty of Science section of the UCC website.

The lecture topics currently available to view include:  Autism, Biochemistry of Health and Mood; Brittle Bones; Cancer; Climate Change; Eugenics and Nazis; Gaia; Health Effects of Ionising Radiation; Mathematics and Economics; Mental Illness; Nuclear Power; Peak Oil; Poisonous Animals; Renewable Energy; Science and Religion.  The presentations made by the finalists in the 2007 UCC Postgraduate Student Public Presentation Competition are also available to view.

All of the lectures are delivered by acknowledged experts in their fields, eg Brendan McWilliams (climate change) and Sir John Polkinghorne FRS (Science and Religion).  More films, taken of The Last Lecture Series that ran throughout 2005 to mark Cork's nomination as European Capital of Culture will soon be available for viewing also.

Professor Reville comments:  "These films provide a valuable source of reliable up-to-date information on critical areas of science and technology that will not only inform but also spark debate.  We also hope that these films will provide a valuable resource for science teachers in secondary schools to stimulate interest in science to initiate class and debates."
