A taste of UREKA for International Students at UCC
03.08.2007

This summer sees 58 science and engineering students from around the world taking part in research projects in UCC through the Undergraduate Research Experience & Knowledge Award (UREKA) programme.
The UREKA programme, funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) is hosted in universities throughout Ireland.  Active research experience is considered one of the most effective ways to attract talented undergraduates providing a stepping stone for careers in science and engineering. "This is an excellent programme for young enthusiastic researchers as it gives them a real taste of life as a researcher, while also providing additional events to broaden their horizons, such as visits to pharmaceutical companies, and also workshops on careers, ethics, intellectual property and science writing" said Dr Sally Cudmore, General Manager of the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC) in UCC and one of the co-organisers of one of the UCC UREKA sites.

The three UCC sites are "Microbe-Host Interactions - The Molecular Dialogue" based in the BioSciences Institute, Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre and Department of Microbiology, UPCRO (Undergraduate PharmaChemical Research Opportunities) based in the School of Pharmacy and the Department of Chemistry and FASTNET (From Atoms to Systems - Tyndall undergraduate research network) in the Tyndall National Institute.
