Boost for UCC Course

UCC's School of Mathematical Sciences has announced that UCC students who wish to become actuaries can now attain exemptions from several professional examinations of the Faculty and Institute of Actuaries (FIA).

The BSc degree programme in Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Science was launched at UCC in 2002 with the first cohort graduating earlier this year.

Professor Bernard Hanzon of UCC's School of Mathematical Sciences welcomed the latest development and explained: "The Exemption Recognition Agreements were awarded following an assessment of the course work and examinations of the Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Science programme taught at UCC's School of Mathematical Sciences. UCC students may now qualify for exemptions in up to six of the eight Core Technical subjects of the FIA."

Although there are now several actuarial courses in Ireland, a particular strength of the UCC course is its focus on Financial Mathematics as well as Actuarial Science. Financial Mathematics deals with the development and application of advanced mathematical tools for analysis of sophisticated financial instruments such as options, swaps and other derivatives. It is of great importance for investment and commercial banks, insurance and fund management companies, regulating bodies, corporate and state treasuries, and hedge funds.

Graduates in Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Science can look forward to careers offering intellectual challenge, professional status, job satisfaction and high earnings. This year's UCC graduates have enjoyed considerable success in finding employment with companies such as Irish Life, Hibernian Assurance, Canada Life, and Mercer's.
