Leading Innovator in Art Practice to deliver Public Lecture at UCC

"What on earth are they talking about? The 'discursive turn' in recent art practice" is the title of a lecture to be delivered by Dr Mick Wilson at UCC on Thursday, 7 December at 6.15pm, West Wing 5.

Mick Wilson is Head of Research & Postgraduate Development at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and a leading innovator and researcher in research in art practice.

The lecture, which is hosted by UCC's History of Art, will examine the turn to discursive modes of practice by artists and curators and explore the complex relationships between research and practice.  Dr Wilson will present material from an essay included in the book Curating Subjects to be published in London in Spring 2007.

Dr Wilson has lectured on a wide range of subjects including contemporary art, cultural studies, and technology studies. He has also exhibited locally and internationally in a variety of media ranging from drawing and sculpture to video and performance. He has contributed more than 30 catalogue essays in support of the work of other artists and also worked as an independent curator. Recent publications include "Invasion of the Kiddyfiddlers" in Robert Atkins and Svetlana Mintcheva (eds.) (2006) Censoring Culture: Contemporary Threats to Free Expression, New York: The New Press and "Tricks of Trade and Terms of Art", Third Text, Volume 19, Number 5.

This is the second lecture in the 2006/07 lecture series in theories of Modernism and Postmodernism in the Visual Arts organised by UCC's History of Art. The series will bring national and international scholars to UCC to reflect upon and present their research in a series of events.

Members of the public are invited to attend and admission is free.
