A group of secondary school students could be heading for Harvard in
December 2007! The International Relations Society, University
College Cork (UCC) has been invited to send an Irish delegation to
attend a prestigious UN Conference for Secondary School Students run by
Harvard University in December 2007. From 17-19 November next,
the Society will host a conference in UCC to select the secondary
school that will represent Ireland in Harvard.
Invitations were issued by the International Relations Society to
secondary schools throughout the country last May and students will
travel from across Ireland to attend the conference in UCC. The
conference will encompass a simulation of the United Nations General
Assembly which seeks to advance students' understanding of
international peace, security and economics through diplomacy and
dialogue. Delegates will be divided into specialised committees to
debate exciting issues of global importance such as Security Council
reform and counter terrorism and will develop comprehensive resolutions
with other students.
The students will also be addressed by distinguished guest speakers
such Mark Little, RTE's Prime-Time correspondent and the Deputy
American Ambassador to Ireland, Mr John Benton, and Dr Jennifer Hurley,
UN Specialist on lobbying and trade ethics, on topical areas affecting
the UN during the opening ceremonies at 5pm on Friday, 17 November in
the Aula Maxima in UCC and the closing ceremonies on Sunday, 19
November at 14:30 in Brookfield House UCC, where the winning delegation
will be announced. Brian Crowley, MEP and Micheál Martin,
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment have also lent their
support to the conference.
