UCC OPEN DAY 2006

An estimated 5000 students, parents and teachers  from all over Ireland, will converge on University College Cork (UCC) on Saturday next (14 October 2006) to participate in the University's annual Open Day for Schools.

The Open Day provides second level students with the opportunity to see for themselves what University life is all about, to meet lecturers and to gather as much information as they need about the honours degree programmes they may later pursue. "The aim is to give the students a feel for what the University has to offer when they come to UCC. Lecturers from all departments will give presentations on programme content and this will be followed by a question and answer session.  Students can visit the Information Stands to meet both lecturers and post-graduate students to raise any questions they might have and find out more about their area of interest. It's an opportunity to look around, tour the facilities and get information on everything from accommodation, to fees, careers, grants and scholarships," explained Nóirín Deady, from the Admissions Office.

Representatives from UCC's Disability Resource Centre will also be available to answer queries about the facilities and structures available in the University to enable students with disabilities to successfully pursue the programme they have chosen.

Talks on all Honours Degree Programmes will be repeated regularly throughout the day. Of particular interest to students will be the new honours degree programmes in Architecture, Sports Science, Chinese Studies, Chemical Physics and Chemistry with Forensic Science. There will also be a detailed presentation on the FETAC Links programmes. Tours of the Mardyke Sports Arena will also take place.  The Glucksman Art Gallery and the Visitors' Centre will be open to students.

There will also be presentations specially aimed at Transition Year students, with a focus on course content and subject choice at second level.  Current students from the Students' Union will talk about "Student Life" at 12 noon and representatives from all student services  (Fees, Accommodation, Careers etc.), the Mature Student Office and the International Education Office will be situated in Main Restaurant for the day.

All students, parents and teachers are welcome.

Open Day timetables are available in schools or on the web at
