Innovative Teaching Practices for UCC Pharmacy Students

Pharmacy is now one of the fastest growing disciplines within UCC's School of Pharmacy established in 2003 to provide undergraduate and postgraduate courses in mainstream and specialist areas of pharmacy. This week (25-27 September) 43 final year Pharmacy students are taking part in a three-day business seminar supported by United Drug, the largest pharmaceutical wholesaler in Ireland. The United Drug Pharmacy Business Seminar, the first of its kind in Ireland, will meet the needs of the teaching curriculum and will be specifically tailored to advising students on their progression from pre-registration through to the highly specialised business of running a successful pharmacy group.

The academic directors at the School of Pharmacy have brought together a diversity of speakers from United Drug, from recruitment specialist Collins McNicholas, as well as established Pharmacy businesses within the Munster region. The Bank of Ireland is offering specialist advice on financial planning and investing for the future and students will be given tips on leadership and motivation by the Captain of the Cork Hurling Team, Mr Seán Og Ó Hailpín.

As Professor Julia Kennedy, UCC Professor of Clinical Practice, explains "Demand for places at UCC's School of Pharmacy is very high and this is due to the existence within UCC of one of the most exciting pharmacy training facilities in Europe. By introducing such innovative teaching programmes, a common theme of UCC's College of Medicine and Health, we aim to ensure that community pharmacies, hospital pharmacies and the pharmaceutical industry are provided with the very best of graduates".

During the Business Seminar, the School of Pharmacy will officially open the Clinical Practice Dispensing Suite within the Cavanagh Pharmacy Building. The Clinical Practice Dispensing Suite is a state-of-the-art facility, unique to UCC, which is specifically designed to enable students to gain valuable experience in the community pharmacy setting. Each student will have their own booth with mock patient records, and dispensing equipment. In this environment, the student will gain real-life experience of working within the modern day pharmacy business. The Clinical Practice Dispensing Suite has been generously supported by local pharmacists and pharmacy-related businesses in the Cork region and will be available for the continuing professional development of established pharmacists out of term time.

Mr Paul Ryan, General Manager of United Drug, said the company is delighted to be able to support and contribute to such innovation in the teaching of the next generation of pharmacists.
