University College Cork (UCC) hosts Neuroscience Ireland Inaugural Conference

The inaugural conference of Neuroscience Ireland takes place on 21 and 22 September 2006 at UCC.  At the conference, the formal launch of the official Irish neuroscience organisation will also take place.

The focus of the inaugural scientific meeting of Neuroscience Ireland is to bring together all researchers working in neuroscience in Ireland (north and south) and also to attract the participation of expatriate researchers currently working abroad.

The conference takes place against a background of significant increase in research in the area of neuroscience within Ireland. This research activity is prompted by a rise in the numbers of neuroscience investigators in Irish universities, hospitals and research institutes, as well as increased success by neuroscience researchers in attaining state and industrial funding.

The scientific programme will bring together leading Irish neuroscientists, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students to present their latest research. It will be inclusive of all fields within neuroscience with special emphasis on the cell and molecular mechanisms underlying neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, motor neuron disease, and schizophrenia. In addition, it will consider how new technologies are leading to the development of more effective treatments for these disorders. A key objective of the conference is to showcase the work of several recently appointed investigators in the neuroscience field who have established new research groups in Ireland.

The conference takes place in Devere Hall, University College, 21-22 September 2006 and is being organised by UCC neuroscientists: Kieran McDermott (Chair), Justin McCarthy, Yvonne Nolan and Cora O'Neill.
