UCC Biochemist wins Young Investigator Award at Bioscience 2006



Dr Patrick Kiely a scientist in the Cell Biology Laboratory, Biochemistry Department and BioSciences Institute, UCC, won the young investigator award at the "BioScience 2006" conference held in Glasgow from 23-27 July. This conference coincided with celebrations to mark the centenary of the Biochemical Journal and featured symposia on the most important research topics in bioscience. A special prize, "The Biochemical Journal Young Investigator Award" was offered for outstanding work presented at the conference. The competition was open to over 450 presentations including lectures and posters by scientists from across the world. Dr Kiely's presentation on newly discovered mechanisms of cancer cell migration was chosen as the best from all of these. The prize was presented by the Biochemical Journal editor Dr George Banting.  Dr Kiely received a commemorative plaque, a cash award, and an invitation to consider his next research article for publication in the Biochemical Journal. Dr Kiely is currently in the first year of a Health Research Board-funded career development fellowship.
