Entrepreneurs and academics meet in Cork for the Irish Academy of Management Conference

Academics, entrepreneurs and policy makers from around Ireland will gather in UCC next week (6-8 September 2006) for the Irish Academy of Management Conference.  Organised by UCC's Department of Management & Marketing, the conference titled 'New Models of Management in the Knowledge-Based Economy', will provide a forum for debate on government strategy on the creation of a knowledge-based economy.

A panel of speakers will discuss topics such as 'Industry-Academia Collaboration: Making it Work' and 'The Expanding Market for Private Health Insurance'. Professor Gerard T. Wrixon, President, UCC, will open the conference.  UCC has a strong track record of co-operation with industry.  Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK) recently announced a €14.6m research project in collaboration with a leading research group in UCC, Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC).  According to Professor Wrixon: "without a doubt, universities have a crucial role to play in the 'knowledge-based economy': they help graduates see things differently and contribute to a more complex society."  Participants in the debate are drawn from Enterprise Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), UCD and Imperial College, London.  Professor Ray Kinsella and Oliver Tattan, CEO, VIVAS Health, will also speak at the conference about private health insurance and the contentious issue of risk equalisation.

The conference takes place from 6-8 September at University College Cork.
