UCC Microbiologist Awarded Oxoid Pierce Prize

Dr Roy Sleater, a post-doctoral scientist at the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC), UCC has been awarded the Oxoid W H Pierce Prize for 2006 by the Society for Applied Microbiology.  This highly prestigious award is presented each year to an outstanding young microbiologist under the age of 40 who has made a significant contribution to microbiology,  as judged by the Society.

The award was first instituted in 1984 by the directors of Oxoid to commemorate the life and works of the late W H (Bill) Pierce, former chief bacteriologist of Oxo Ltd and a long-time member of the Society for Applied Microbiology.

Dr Sleater delivered the 2006 Memorial Lecture at the Society's summer conference in Edinburgh.  The lecture was titled "Understanding a Pathogen's Gut Feelings - the gastrointestinal phase of Listeria monocytogenes Infection."
