University College Cork (UCC) hosts e-Law Summer Institute

From 17 July to 11 August 2006, UCC's Faculty of Law, in co-operation with Franklin Pierce Law Center in New Hampshire, are hosting the second annual e-Law Summer Institute (eLSI).  This year Irish students are joined by students from Korea, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and, of course, the USA.  Staff from the Faculty of Law, UCC and from Franklin Pierce Law Center are teaching on the programme.

The Institute, which is accredited by the American Bar Association, focuses on the emerging policy and law of the information age and is designed to be a critical learning experience for the lawyer of the 21st century, who must have a much greater understanding and appreciation of the domestic and international aspects of this growing and evolving body of law.   Topics examined include: regulation of the internet and cyber crime; protecting the online consumer and the legal control of spam.

As well as addressing issues of law and policy of the information age, the Institute is at the forefront in using information technology in the delivery of its courses.  For instance, students are provided with CDs of reading materials in advance of classes.  The Institute also includes asynchronous teaching modules whereby individual classes are pre-recorded and delivered on DVD or can be downloaded by Vodcast for viewing on computer or Video iPod.

At a reception, sponsored by the Southern Law Association and the Law Faculty at UCC, held to mark the second annual e-Law Institute, the President of the Southern Law Association, Ms Sinead Behan, welcomed the students to Cork and wished them well in their studies.  The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Caroline Fennell said "the Institute is one of a number of initiatives which places the Faculty at the cutting edge in developing online legal resources and integrating information technology into teaching and research programmes". The reception was attended by a number of High Court judges, as well as members of the local judiciary, the legal profession and the Law Faculty.
