Centre for Architectural Education in Cork

In response to the continued development of Cork as an international cultural and educational centre, University College Cork (UCC) and Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) have established a four-year BSc in Architecture degree which commences next October. This exciting and innovative new honours degree programme has been developed with the support of the local architectural profession and in consultation with the Southern Region of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI).

This new programme, which will be part of a New Centre for Architectural Education in Cork, will complement and will be supported by, the existing wide and diverse range of programmes offered by the two institutions across a range of disciplines including Civil Environmental and Structural Engineering, Construction, Architectural Technology, Interior Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Multi-Media, Fine Art, Art History, Planning and Sustainable Development and Environmental Science.

Welcoming the development, UCC's Registrar and Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Professor Paul Giller, said: "The new Centre for Architectural Education in Cork is a major and natural development for the two institutions, building on their educational reputation and the range of programmes and expertise that will support this initiative. The new Centre and the undergraduate and postgraduate courses that are being developed will serve not only Cork City and the entire Munster region but will also attract students nationally and internationally. The Centre will reinforce the region's reputation as a provider of highly-skilled graduates in design, engineering, environmental and allied disciplines, and is in response to the growing demand in Munster for architectural education to support the rapidly developing construction sector regionally and nationally."

CIT Registrar, Mr Brendan Goggin, said, "We are particularly pleased with the support which we have received from the architectural profession in the southern region and the new programme has been planned to meet the requirements of the profession.  A distinctive character of the programme will be its emphasis on design and it will also include technology subjects and other associated disciplines to be found in architecture courses internationally. The justification for the course was in no small measure assisted by Cork's designation as the European Capital of Culture in 2005 and the benefits that have come to the city as a result."

Students will be registered in UCC and CIT and receive tuition in both institutions. The degree programme will provide:
