"Language and Identity" - Seminar at UCC, 15-16 June


A Seminar to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Finnish Literature Society will take place at UCC on 15-16 June.  Organised jointly by the Department of Folklore and Ethnology, UCC and the Finnish Literature Society, the seminar titled "Language and Identity" commences at 9am on 15 June with a talk by Tuomas Lehtoen "In a Strange Country, Identity, Language and Nation Building" followed by Micheal Briody who will speak on "A 'Dying' Tradition vs a Dying Language. the Politics of Folklore Collecting in the Independent Irish State".  "The Emergence of a Christian Identity in Early Medieval Ireland" is the title of a talk by Katja Ritari at 10am followed by Máire Ní Annracháin whose talk is titled "Silent O Moyle? Gaelic identities in an Irish-Scottish continuum".  

John Shaw will speak on "Gaelic identities between Scotland and Cape Breton in Nova Scotia" whilst Niamh Hourigan will close the morning's programme with a talk "Irish language and Gaeltacht identity: changing discourse in late 20th century Ireland".  Angela Bourke commences the afternoon's proceedings with a talk "Even a Child Can Digest it Easily: Cultural Prescription in Pearse's Fictions" followed by speaker Hona Pikkanen and Discussion.

Friday's programme commences with speaker Pertti Anttonen: "Language Myths and the Making of National Identity in Finland" followed by Diarmuid Ó Giolláin: whose topic is "Between the provincial and the universal: folklore and national identity".  Heli Kautonen's talk is titled "Three Representations of a Cultural Identity Icon.:  Other speakers include: Lauri Harvilahti with a talk titled "Language, Tradition and Social Mobility: Three Case Studies" followed by Stiofán O Cadhla whose talk is titled "Hagiology and Fairyology: John O'Donovan and Ethnological Critique 1834-1842". Ríonach uí Ogáin will close the morning's programme with a talk titled "Landscape in Song: The repertoire of Pádraigín Mhacaigh". Speakers at the afternoon session include: Henrik Steniuswith "The Creation of the Finnish Political Language: The Example of the Concept of "Citizen" followed by Neil Buttimer: "(Re)constructing identity: Irish and the State, 1922-2006" and final speaker Brian O Conchubhair whose talk is titled "John Ford - putting the Irish into Irish-American".

The Seminar closes with discussion and conclusion 4-5pm.
