Bridging the Gap 2006 Showcase, 7/8 June

1,500 primary school pupils will participate in the annual Bridging the Gap showcase at UCC this week (7/8 June 2006).  The pupils aged five to 12 have been involved in music, drama, mime, science, law, digital storytelling and tile-making projects funded by Bridging the Gap.  "The aim of the event is to showcase the children's talents and give them a platform for celebration in addition to forging closer links with UCC and the schools involved", explained Dr Tracy Connolly of UCC's Education Department.

Bridging the Gap, based in UCC's Department of Education, was set up in 2001 under the direction of Professor Aine Hyland, Professor of Education and Vice-President, UCC and managed by Dr Tracy Connolly. It works closely with 42 primary and post-primary schools in Cork city and sims to enhance the educational experiences of the pupils in these schools. It also collaborates with other local and national agencies working in these communities.

Bridging the Gap has been proactive in bringing both pupils and their parents to the university and throughout the years has been responsible for thousands of visitors to UCC. The visits enable the young pupils to get a flavour of university life.  A large number of UCC staff and students have supported Bridging the Gap since 2001 by providing their expertise to the schools.

The showcase takes place on Wednesday, 7 June, 9.30am and 11.30am and on Thursday, 8 June at 10am in Devere Hall, Áras na Mac Léinn, UCC.
