The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce the appointment of the Honourable Mr Justice Paul Carney as Adjunct Professor of the Faculty of Law.
Mr Justice Carney is one of the most senior judges of the High Court and the presiding judge of the Central Criminal Court. He is widely regarded as a leading expert on Irish criminal law and has presided over murder and rape trials since his appointment to the High Court in 1991. Since 2002 the Central Criminal Court has heard cases in regional locations around the country. For the first time in the history of the State the court heard two murder cases in Cork in 2005.
“The appointment of Judge Paul Carney as Adjunct Professor complements the Faculty of Law’s expertise in the area of criminal law and justice” explained Professor Caroline Fennell, Dean of Law at UCC. “The Faculty has developed a strong research profile in the area of criminal justice. We have a number of PhD students currently researching in this area. Our LL.M. (Criminal Justice – Clinical) is a unique programme in Ireland which gives our students the opportunity to interact with and learn from the leading academics and professionals in this field. This appointment will further enhance our clinical programmes which provide students with an unrivalled opportunity to experience the law in practice.”
Mr Justice Carney is a graduate of Gonzaga College, University College Dublin and the Honorable Society of King’s Inns. He was called to the Bar in 1966 and was appointed a judge of the High Court in 1991. Both his parents were academics and founded a Department of Celtic Studies at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. His duties as Adjunct Professor will include delivering guest lectures and seminars as well as contributing to the development of postgraduate research in the field of criminal justice.
