School Project Awards Competition for UCC's Access-Linked Schools

The standard of excellence of projects undertaken by students in UCC's Access-Linked Schools was recognised at two prize-giving ceremonies when students, parents and teachers from 26 secondary schools in Cork and Kerry were welcomed to UCC by Ms Olive Byrne, UCC's Access Officer.

Students were invited to submit entries on a topic of their choice.  Projects were entered by first, second, transition and fifth year students on a wide variety of educational, cultural and local topics.  Ms Byrne applauded the high standard of projects entered.  "The Access Programme staff would like to congratulate students who received an award;  the success of the competition is reflected in the fact that more than 400 awards were presented at two ceremonies to recognise the students' efforts." she said.

Certificates and prizes were presented by Mr Con O'Brien, Academic Secretary at the first award ceremony followed by Dr Anne Mills, Admissions Officer at the second ceremony.

UCC's Access Programme commenced in 1996 and is a priority policy of the University's Strategic Development Plan. The Access Programme targets those students who have the ability to benefit from and succeed in higher education, but who, for social or economics reasons, are underrepresented at third level.
