New Research Communications Portfolio launched at UCC, 12 May

New research communications portfolio underlines UCC's commitment to engaging with regional, national and international industry stakeholders as well as with the public.

The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin TD, today (12 May 2006) launched UCC's new research communications portfolio designed to promote its research activities to industry and the general public.
At the launch, Minister Martin commented: "It is well accepted that the role of a University within the community extends beyond traditional research and teaching functions.  It also exercises a major influence on the economic development of the region as an incubator of new ideas and provider of technological expertise.  I welcome the development of UCC's research communications portfolio. It was prepared in consultation with state agencies such as Enterprise Ireland and the IDA and will greatly assist their efforts to promote Ireland and the Cork region as an attractive investment location for both indigenous and overseas companies."

UCC President, Professor Gerard T. Wrixon commented: "The portfolio includes a redesigned and updated on-line information resource and a suite of information brochures on UCC's research agenda. This includes information on UCC generally as well as more specific information on some of the major research centres showcasing their activities, expertise and industry links.  The portfolio is an important addition to the University's communications strategy with external stakeholders and also with the research community, highlighting research and collaboration opportunities as well as relevant developments in the research environment."

UCC has a long and proud tradition as one of Ireland's most successful education and research institutions. Established originally as Queen's University in 1845, UCC is the third largest university in Ireland with a cohort of approximately 15,500 students and an academic and research staff complement of almost 1,500.

It is home to a number of world-class research institutes including the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, Analytical and Biological Chemistry Research Facility, BioSciences Institute, Boole Centre for Research in Informatics, Cork Constraints Computation Centre, Environmental Research Institute and the Tyndall National Institute.

The Office of the Vice-President for Research Policy and Support is the first point of contact both for researchers and industry with respect to research at UCC. The Office of the Vice-President for Research Policy and Support provides the University and the wider community with research support through information, assistance, guidance and advice on all aspects of the planning, execution, sustaining and application of research.

The current Vice-President for Research Policy and Support is Professor M. Peter Kennedy. Professor Kennedy is the founding Head of the Department of Microelectronic Engineering at University College Cork. He received the BE (Electronics) degree from UCD and the MS and PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. Professor M. Peter Kennedy has been Vice-President for Research Policy and Support since June 2005.
