A high-level education delegation from Vietnam visited UCC today
(Wednesday 10 May 2006). The delegation, which was led by H.E Dr. Tran
Quoc Toan, Vice Minister and Secretary General of the Vietnam National
Council of Education, is made up of Presidents, Vice Chancellors and
Deans of a number of universities in Vietnam, including the prestigious
Vietnam National University. The visit to Ireland is the first of its
kind and reflects Vietnam's emergence as a country set to develop its
educational system to include partnerships with overseas institutions.
The Vietnamese Government has taken a decision to develop its economy
along western lines and the promotion of links with western
universities is part of this overall objective.
The delegation was officially welcomed to UCC by Professor Michael
Murphy, Head of the College of Medicine and Health and they also be met
Professor Paul Giller, Registrar and Vice President for Academic
Affairs. Meetings took place with the International Education
Office and with academic staff in the areas of Biotechnology, Business,
Computer Science and Microelectronics Engineering.
The Irish Government has recently opened an Embassy in Hanoi and
education will feature as a key priority of the Embassy in developing
links between Ireland and Vietnam. The new Embassy will also play a key
role in promoting Ireland's Development Aid programme.
UCC currently welcomes more than 2000 international students to its
campus and 76 different countries are represented. It is hoped that, as
a result of this visit and ongoing contacts with Vietnam, students from
Vietnam will choose UCC as an overseas study destination in the coming
years.
