UCC BIS Students win Enterprise Ireland Merit Award

Hauliers will never again face the pain of lost goods!  This is according to Long Haul Solutions, a team of UCC MBS in Business Information Systems (BIS) students who recently won an Enterprise Ireland Merit Award at the Enterprise Ireland Student Awards.  The team of David Farrell, AilĂs Hayes, William Martin, Kieran Lucid, Run Zhang and Michael Clancy formed as a specialised service company dedicated to maximising the potential of Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) in the distribution of goods. Their product, Cross-Check uses RFID tags to physically pinpoint each pallet in the distribution chain. In addition, the early warning systems prevent pallets being loaded on the wrong truck.

The Student Enterprise Awards competition, now in its 23rd year, is designed to encourage innovation, promote enterprise and foster a spirit of entrepreneurship among third level students. The awards are sponsored jointly by Enterprise Ireland, Ulster Bank and Invest Northern Ireland and were, this year, held in Queen's University Belfast.

UCC Lecturer, Brian O'Flaherty, Programme Director expressed his pride on the students' success.  "The students learn to appreciate that business issues drive any new technology venture", said O'Flaherty.

The UCC students received significant support and advice from their industry mentor, P.J. Fitzgerald, Logistics Manager with M/A-Com Eurotec.
