Law Society of Ireland Announces Training for Solicitors in Cork
The announcement by the Law Society of Ireland to locate its
professional training course for Solicitors in Cork, in collaboration
with the Law Faculty at University College Cork (UCC), has been warmly
welcomed by Professor Gerard T. Wrixon, President of UCC. The
announcement was made today (10 April 2006) by the President of the Law
Society of Ireland Mr. Michael Irvine at the Cork Courthouse. "The
venture underscores the importance of Law within the University and
secures the position of Cork as a centre for excellence in legal
research and education. This initiative signals to the
local and legal community generally in Ireland, that the Law Faculty at
UCC is pre-eminent as a provider of quality and innovative legal
education in Ireland", said Professor Wrixon.
Amongst those present at the launch were the Director General of the
Law Society, Mr Ken Murphy, the Chair of the Education Committee of the
Law Society, Mr Stuart Gilhooly, the Law Society's Director of
Education, Mr T. P. Kennedy and the Deputy Director of Education, Mr
Geoffrey Shannon. Also present was the President of the Southern
Law Association, Ms Sinead Behan, Solicitor and the Dean of the Faculty
of Law, Professor Caroline Fennell.
Following the announcement, Professor Fennell said "The partnership
with the Law Society of Ireland securing this availability of
professional training outside Dublin will be attractive to students,
and facilitate recruitment from the entire country. Graduates of the
UCC Law Faculty are currently the single largest degree contributor to
the Law Society's professional course. Hence, the availability of
professional training in Cork is an important development for all
graduates who will have an opportunity to pursue professional training
in a location outside Dublin. In particular mature graduates of
both the day BCL and Evening BCL programmes will now be in a position
to continue their professional training without the difficulty of
having to move to Dublin for the duration."
"The Faculty of Law at UCC will by this initiative continue to enhance
the provision of education to its students, complement its high
research standing with quality teaching and learning, and further
bridge the gap between the practice and theory of law, which has long
been part of its distinctive mission. The relationship with the
Law Society of Ireland will deepen existing partnerships with local and
international sectors, open up opportunities for students, and initiate
synergies for research in conjunction with relevant communities and
business" said Professor Fennell.
The course will commence in September 2006 and is expected to have an intake of approximately 100 students.
