UCC Annual Sports Star Awards 2005-2006



Inter-county stars Tom Kenny (Hurling) and Rachel Moloney (Camogie) are among eleven UCC students who will be honoured at the 23rd Annual UCC Sports Star Awards today (10 April 2006) at 6pm in the Aula Maxima. The awards honour the eleven students who in sporting terms have been the highest achievers during the preceding twelve months. 

According to Christine O'Donovan, Acting Director of Physical Education & Sport "We are delighted to honour these sports stars who have attained such high honours in their chosen field. The standards achieved by these sports stars bring great credit to the university.  UCC is indebted to all those involved in providing for and promoting sport at UCC."

The Awards were first introduced in 1984 by UCC with sponsorship by Jury's Hotel Cork with the Bank of Ireland coming on board as co-sponsors in 2001 for this the high point of the student-sporting year.

Amongst the former winners of the awards who have gone on to achieve full international or equivalent honours are Gillian O'Sullivan, Freda Davoren (Athletics), Peter Stringer, Paul Wallace, Frank Sheahan (Rugby), Sarah Kelleher, Deirdre Deasy, Mary Logue, Rachael Kohler (Ladies Hockey), John Morris, Niall Goulding (Golf), Rose Breen (Basketball), Maurice Fitzgerald, Anthony Lynch, Seamus Moynihan (Gaelic Football), Nicky English, Cathal Casey Pat Hartnett, Frank Lohan, Joe Deane, John Browne, Tommy Walsh, Tom Kenny (Hurling), Una O'Dwyer (Camogie) and Eugene Coakley (Rowing).

Guest of Honour at this function is Dr Clare O'Leary (First Irish Woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest).

Amongst those who will attend this year's awards are personalities from the world of sport, UCC staff, UCC Athletic Union members, parents and friends of the recipients, coaches and representatives from Jury's and the Bank of Ireland.  Also in attendance will be representatives from other University Sports Departments. Organiser of the event is Ms Christine O'Donovan, Acting Director of Physical Education & Sport at UCC.
