"Science Speak" , 15 May



The inaugural "SCIENCE SPEAK" event, hosted by the "Irish Universities Promoting Science" Initiative, in association with the RDS and The Irish Times will take place in the RDS, Dublin on Monday 15 May 2006 at 7pm.

Seven postgraduate Science students, one from each of the Irish Universities will make a ten minute presentation on his/her research in lay terms.  An overall winner will be selected by a panel of judges which includes Adi Roche, Director of Chernobyl Children's Project, Kathriona Devereux of RTE's "Scope" and Dick Ahlstrom of the "Irish Times".  The event will be compered by Pat Kenny of RTE and the prizes have been sponsored by the Wyeth BioPharma company.

UCC's representative is Nicolle Wilke, winner of the recent "Science For All" postgraduate public presentation competition who will present a talk entitled "Micro-needles: forget about pain and anxiety".

The importance of this event can not be over-emphasised with the ongoing need to promote science as a viable and important career choice and also its relevance to everyday life generally.

The "Irish Universities Promoting Science" initiative involves the Science Faculties/Colleges of University College Cork, University College Dublin, University of Dublin Trinity College, Dublin City University, NUI Galway, NUI Maynooth and the University of Limerick all working together in the promotion of science and science education nationally and internationally.  The flagship website www.universityscience.ie, provides a wide range of information about Science programmes offered by the Irish universities, research and career opportunities and other related articles.
