UCC Students to attend United Nations University Conference, 10-15 April

Students from University College Cork (UCC) are among 3,200 university students from across the world who will attend a prestigious United Nations Conference for University Students in New York.  The National Model United Nations Conference (NMUN) takes place in the General Assembly and caucus rooms of the UN Headquarters in New York from 10-15 April.

The ten students, who received the invitation, following extensive lobbying through the UCC International Relations Society, will attend the conference for five days where they will develop skills of communications, research and diplomacy.  Head delegate and vice-auditor of the Society, Cian Cotter said "Receiving this invitation is of great importance. Ireland has never been previously recognised or represented at this conference and it is a great privilege for UCC." During the conference, the students will endeavour to propose resolutions addressing topical UN issues such as: peacekeeping allocation, human rights, gender equality, economic and social development, and the environmental sustainability.

The conference is run by the National Collegiate Conference Association (NCCA) under the direction of the Secretary General Kofi Annan. NCCA programs offer a diverse group of informed participants a forum for discussing global concerns in a context that closely parallels current UN discussion and mandates.  The NMUN programs provide students with a better understanding of the inner working of the United Nations as they build skills in diplomacy and compromise.
