Students WISE up at University College Cork (UCC)
More than 300 female students attended the two-day Women in Science and
Engineering (WISE) Programme held at UCC on Thursday and Friday, 30 and
31 March 2006. The objective of the WISE programme is to encourage more
female students in transition year and fifth year to consider careers
in Engineering, and the Mathematical, Physical and Chemical Sciences.
Students, who came from most counties in Ireland, participated in
dynamic workshops which highlighted the role of engineering in everyday
life and provided an overview of the three degree programmes offered by
UCC - Process and Chemical, Civil and Environmental, and Electrical
& Electronic Engineering. The comprehensive programme also
included presentations on the Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
Students availed of tours of the University campus, Mardyke Sports
Arena, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex and the Lewis Glucksman
Gallery. This event also coincided with the Open Day for Schools
giving the WISE participants an extra opportunity to visit information
stands and presentations of their choice.
The WISE Programme was organised by UCC's Admissions Office and continues to be sponsored by Intel Ireland Limited.
