How healthy is your diet? This is the question being posed to UCC
students when the University launches its first-ever Healthy Eating
Week on next Monday, 13 March. Organised by UCC's Restaurant
Committee in conjunction with UCC's Students' Union, BUPA Ireland, the
Irish Heart Foundation and Campbell Catering, the week-long (13-16
March) promotion aims to increase student awareness of the benefits of
a well-balanced diet.
Dr Tom Cavanagh, Vice-Chairman of UCC's Governing Body will be on hand
to launch the Week on Monday next at 12.30 in the Main
Restaurant. Also present will be Ms Sarah Simkin, Students' Union
Welfare Officer, Martin Clancy, BUPA Ireland's General Manager of
Sales, Sister Siobhán Ryan of the Irish Heart Foundation and Ms Trish
Spellman, Managing Director of Campbell Catering.
During the week in restaurants throughout campus, students can savour a
choice of low cost healthy dishes such as low fat pizzas, smoothies and
juices as well as free salad bowls and mineral water. Students
can also attend fun cookery classes, hear lectures on a variety of
themes such as fitness and vegetables! A party atmosphere will prevail
tempting students with mouth-watering dishes and offering advice on
what foods to purchase and which to avoid. To coincide with Seachtain
na Gaeilge, Wednesday (15th) will be designated Lá na Gaeilge.
Specially commissioned posters highlighting the benefits of healthy
diet will be on display in all eating areas. Food pyramid magnets will
be available free of charge to all students who purchase healthy food
options.
Chairman of UCC's Restaurant Committee, Ray Foley, explained "This week
is part of UCC's aim to raise awareness and to provide healthy food
options for students and staff at competitive prices. A healthy
food policy for the University is in preparation and the University has
applied to the Irish Heart Foundation for its national award of Healthy
Eating at Work.
Commenting on BUPA Ireland's sponsorship of UCC's Healthy Eating Week,
Bronagh Twomey Marketing Manager said: "Eating healthily, especially in
times of stress such as when studying for exams, is a powerful
aid. Highlighting the benefits of a varied and healthy diet in a
fun way is what Healthy Eating Week is all about."
Healthy Eating Week runs in UCC from 13-16 March throughout all
restaurants on campus and all students and staff are invited to
participate.
