UCC hosts the 49th Annual Irish Geological Research Meeting, 24-26 February

UCC's Department of Geology will host the 49th Annual Irish Geological Research Meeting from 24-26 February 2006.  Traditionally, this meeting has been a forum for postgraduate students to present the results of original research in a scholarly atmosphere and for colleagues, north and south of the border to exchange ideas.

As part of the meeting two sponsored talks will be delivered by internationally respected Earth Scientists. On Friday evening (24 February) at 8.00 pm, Dr Mike Searle of the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oxford will speak on "Southward extrusion of the Himalaya, eastward extrusion of Tibet and the link with the Burma - Andaman - Sumatra seismic zone." Mike is a mountaineer and one of few geologists to have summitted on the world's highest peak. His talk will move from the high Himalayas to the site of the 26 December 2004 M9.3 Earthquake.

On Saturday evening (25 February) at 8.00pm, Professor Bill McGuire of University College London will speak on "Surviving Armageddon: solutions for a threatened planet."  Bill is an expert on natural disasters, catastrophies and risk. He was a major advisor on the documentary "Supervolcano" and his talk will cover events such as massive earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, meteorite impacts, their impact on climate change and the steps, if any, we can take to avoid them.

Both talks are open to the public and admission is free. The talks take place in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC (on College Road).
